Texas Veterans Comission

The May monthly general meeting will be at Bayland Park Community Center from 10:00AM to Noon on Saturday, May 22.

Our special invited speaker will be Ericka Barber, Veterans Counselor, from the Texas Veterans Commission.  Ericka's topic will "Women in the Military".

April Monthly Meeting Announcement

The April monthly general meeting will be at Bayland Park Community Center from 10:00AM to Noon on Saturday, April 24.

Robert HinsleyOur special invited speaker will be Robert B. Hinsley.  Mr. Hinsley's topic will be "What's in Your Wallet?  The New Credit Card Debt Regulations".  Mr. Hinsley has 40 years of experience in trial litigation and consumer law focusing on representing individuals in disputing their credit card debt without bankruptcy or consolidation.  Robert is a long-time Houstonian, who graduated from Reagan High School in 1956, The University of Texas in 1961, and The University of Texas Law School in 1964.  He practiced with the firm of Schlumberger, Hinsley and Westmoreland for 10 years; practices now as The Hinsley Law Firm, focusing on Consumer issues.  He has been a Member of the Houston Bar Association from 1964 to the present.  Mr. Hinsley is a longtime Houstonian whose ancestors settled in San Felipe, Texas around 1840.

Robert Hinsley is a prolific and entertaining public speaker and makes numerous speeches each month.  He is readily available to speak on a variety of legal subjects to groups of all sizes.

March Monthly Meeting Announcement

The March monthly general meeting will be at Bayland Park Community Center from 10:00AM to Noon on Saturday, March 27.

Dr. Richard MurrayOur special invited speaker will be Dr. Richard Murray, Director, Center for Public Policy, University of Houston.  Dr. Murray is a native of Louisiana with B.A. and M.A. degrees in Government from Louisiana State University (1962, 1963) and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota (1967).  Dr. Murray has taught at the University of Houston since 1966 and is currently the Bob Lanier Professor of Public Policy in the UH Department of Political Science and Director of Surveying for the UH Center for Public Policy.  His academic interests are in Houston and Texas politics, focusing on campaigns and elections, political parties and interest groups and public opinion.  Professor Murray has written extensively in these areas, while teaching courses ranging from graduate seminars to introductory American Government.  Dr. Murray occasionally conducts polls for local media, and local governments and is a political analyst for Channel 13, KTRK Television.

Come hear Dr. Murray's insights and analysis of the March primaries and runoffs and the prospects for the Democrat candidates in this November's general elections.  Find out what Dr. Murray thinks about Bill White's chances are for unseating Rick Perry and if the Democrats have a real chance at regaining control of the Texas Legislature.

February Monthly Meeting Announcement

Gerry Birbberg, Chair, Harris County Democratic PartyThe February  monthly general meeting will be at Bayland Park Community Center from 10:00AM to Noon on Saturday, February 27.  Our special invited speaker will be Gerry Birnberg, Chair, Harris County Democratic Party .  Gerry will fill us in on all the latest March 2nd Democratic Primary Election news and preparations for Precinct and Senate District Conventions.  I'm sure Gerry will also give us an overview of the county-wide plans and strategies being employed by the Party to increase upon the terrific gains that were made in getting Democrats elected to local, county and state elective offices during the 2008 elections.  Gerry is an excellent speaker and this is a great opportunity to meet him, hear his views on the Party's future prospects and an opportunity to thank him for his dedication and tireless work to help take back political control of Harris County by fellow Democrats and to turn it blue once again.

We have also been notified by the office of the Honorable Al Green, US Congressman, Texas 9th CD, that the Congressman will be also be stopping by the meeting to say hello to the SDC members.  If you know Congressman Green, you know that he will have some interesting and illuminating comments on the latest issues and happenings from the US Congress and how they will effect us locally.

The main item on the regular business meeting agenda will be the election of new officers and board members for 2010.  Please remember that in order to vote in the SDC elections you must be a current dues paid member so if you want to vote, don't forget to pay your dues!  At $10 per calendar year it's one of the best bargains around.  Dues paid members will be given an official ballot at the check-in table when you sign-in.  Any dues paid SDC member is eligible to run for SDC office.

January 2010 Monthly Meeting Announcement

The January 2010 monthly general meeting will be at Bayland Park Community Center from 10AM to Noon on Saturday, January 23rd.   The highlight of this Saturday's meeting will be our long anticipated panel discussion on "The Future of Health Care" in the United States.  Our distinguished panelists are David Lopez, Ken Kenegos, Dr. Margaret Nosek and Dr. Jim Granato.  The discussion will be lead and moderated by our past SDC president Mike Laster.  There will be a brief open questions from the floor segment at the end of the discussion.  We are very fortunate to have such a distinguished panel of experts so this should be an extremely interesting and informative meeting.

Our regular business meeting will follow the health care panel discussion.  Agenda topics will include announcements related to our officer and board member elections to be held at the February 27th meeting and plans for this years activities.

This is going to be a very busy meeting with a tight schedule and the meeting will start promptly at 10am so please plan to arrive early for the meeting no later than 9:45AM.  A meeting flyer is attached.  We want to have an excellent turnout for this important meeting so please help to publicize the event among your friends and invite them to attend the meeting with you.

Scott Hochberg

 

The October 2009 monthly general meeting will be at Bayland Park Community Center from 10AM to Noon on Saturday, October 24.  Our special invited speaker will be Scott Hochberg,  Texas State Representative District 137.  Rep. Resolution for National Health Care Reform

Honorable Al Green, US Congressman, Texas 9th CDThe August monthly general meeting will be at Bayland Park Community Center from 9:30AM to Noon on Saturday, August 22.  Our special invited speaker will be the Honorable Al Green ,  US Congressman, Texas 9th CD.  Congressman Green's previous visits to the SDC have been very informative and lively.  This is our opportunity to communicate our interests and concerns directly with our US Congressman and to get his perspective on the current session's activities and prospects for the remainder of the session.  Congressman Green is a terrific speaker and I'm sure he will present a interesting and enlightening picture of the current state of various legislative matters important to all members.

Congressman Green's time will be limited so in the interest of allotting as much time as possible to Congressman Green, please arrive early at the meeting room by 9:30AM to meet and greet local candidates, sign petitions, visit with club members, share the latest political gossip and enjoy our usual snacks.

June Monthy Meeting Announcement

Caleb CrowThe June monthly general meeting will be at Bayland Park Community Center from 10AM to Noon on Saturday, June 27.  Our special invited speaker will be Caleb Crow, Senior Director of Program Services at the Tagos Group.  Caleb is a specialist on sustainability in the built environment. He studied Electrical Engineering in preparation for a career in energy conservation, renewable energy and sustainability. Caleb has been a technical consultant for over 10 years developing and managing energy conservation programs.

As Senior Director of Program Services for Tagos Group and a LEED AP, Caleb designs and implements energy efficiency programs for K-12 schools, colleges, universities, single-family residences, multi-family residences, and office buildings.

Prior to joining Tagos, Caleb worked with the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) implementing the Houston Residential Energy Efficiency Retrofit Program which targeted 10,000 homes annually in City of Houston with a focus on reducing residential greenhouse gas emissions. In additional to his work on the residential program, Caleb facilitated performance contracting to performance halls, municipal buildings and higher education. Prior to CCI, Caleb served as Vice President for Services to Programs for Performance Systems Development, a nationally-recognized consulting and contracting company. Caleb managed state, utility and not-for-profit energy conservation and home performance programs. He managed the development of custom software applications for tracking ESCos and building owners with deemed, predicted and realized energy savings. Caleb worked with clients to deliver tailored program and software solutions in energy efficiency through the entire project life-cycle: design, development, training, marketing, launch and maintenance. He also understands the field work for energy conservation, having been on retrofit installation crews and working as a photovoltaic (solar) installer.
